The Challenge
The customer had been experiencing difficulty controlling bacteria on the “neck rinses” and bottle conveyor system. The neck rinse was a necessary production step to wash off liquid product which had splashed during the filling stage.
Site had sought recommendations from several other water treatment specialists for a solution and were advised options including Ozone and Hydrogen Peroxide treatments to disinfect the rinse water however these suggestions were both dismissed on Health & Safety grounds.
The issue with bacterial growth had led to lost production due to periodic shutdowns to perform disinfection and spoiled product increasing waste.
Any solution would need to show significant reductions in bacterial growth while being non-hazardous for staff.
The Solution
The Feedwater consultant engaged in this project made the decision that Chlorine Dioxide was the best solution to the customers’ bacterial problem. Working closely with the customer and Feedwater lab a trial was conducted using an Activ-Ox 3000 chlorine dioxide system utilising standard Activ-Ox pre-cursor chemicals to dose chlorine dioxide into the rinser system. The Activ-Ox unit had the capability to dose chlorine dioxide instantly on-demand via a secure reinforced injection Tee piece integral to the pipework of the water being treated.
However the trial showed the ClO2 strength to be too strong for the application, so the lab produced a bespoke lower strength solution for the next stage of the trial. The customer employed an outside analytical company to oversee the results.
The whole trial process took 6 weeks from order, installation of the unit, product evaluation and analysis.
The Results
The customer was thrilled with the results of the trial which showed the effectiveness of the Activ-Ox chlorine dioxide system using the bespoke pre-cursors. The third-party lab results showed a dramatic reduction in bacterial levels impressing the customer who quickly ordered two additional Activ-Ox 3000 units for their other bottling lines.
Immediate Benefits
- Bacterial levels were controlled
- Health & Safety was maintained
Long Term Benefits
- Long term cost savings in production
- Reduction in discarded material/waste production
The Conclusion
The Activ-Ox 3000 unit proved to be a big success achieving the outcome desired by the client, the trial period was an integral step to establishing the right strength of product for the application and the flexibility of Feedwater’s production facilities meant a bespoke solution could be blended especially for the client.
With proven results from the installed system, the client requested quotations to install a further two Activ-Ox Chlorine Dioxide units.
