Polytan 4F Tannin Treatment For Locomotives, Traction Engines And Heritage Steam Applications
- Traditional Tannin based multifunctional treatment
- Provides corrosion and scale control
- Very cost effective
- Great for idle boiler protection
- Protection can be gauged just by the water colour
- Protects steel, copper, brass
-
Does not add substantially to the boiler water alkalinity (Reduces Foaming Risk)
Polytan 4F combines the traditional benefits of natural tannins as a locomotive water treatment with state-of-the-art synthetic sludge conditioners to provide excellent corrosion and scale control for heritage steam applications.
POLYTAN 4F controls corrosion by the dual mechanism of oxygen scavenging and the formation of a corrosion resistant tannate film. It prevents scale formation by converting residual hardness salts to a mobile non-adherent sludge that can be removed by regular blowdown or during wash-outs. The chemical doesn’t add greatly to the TDS and thus is perfect for boilers which are susceptible to foaming / priming causing carryover.
POLYTAN 4F is also suitable for boilers with copper components which makes it perfect for use in typical land, maritime and heritage steam boilers.
WHY USE POLYTAN 4F
Polytan 4F is a high strength tannin boiler treatment which provides superior protection at a dosage rate of just 1/3rd of that of competitor heritage steam products.
HOW TO USE IT
To provide excellent corrosion protection Polytan 4F should be added to the boiler at an initial dosage rate of 1 litre / 1000 litres of boiler water content. The colour of the boiler water should be that of a strong cup of tea or bitter beer. This colour should be maintained by adding additional Polytan to the feed water tank each time it is topped up at the rate of 100 – 200ml / 1000 litres of make-up water. A certain amount of trial and error may be required to work out the optimum dosage rate.
For applications using naturally soft water (or softened water) and light usage applications then Polytan 4F will also provide excellent protection against limescale build up. However, for high usage hard water applications where there is a greater likelihood of scale formation we recommend that either the make-up water is softened or our alternative high alkali tannin product Polytan 4C is used instead.
The active tannin reserve can be measured using a simple Tannin testkit.
