About the Client
Large NHS Hospital.
Multi-building site with a common steam boiler house containing 3 cycled steam boilers and very extensive condensate system.
The system was being treated using Corroban 26 oxygen scavenger, Corroban 30 alkalinity builder/polymer sludge conditioner and Corroban 64 phosphate/polymer scale control/sludge conditioner.
The Challenge
The Hospital ran three cycled steam boilers all of which suffered boiler water which was heavily contaminated with red-brown suspended solids, this often made testing chemical parameters difficult due to the problem in trying to distinguish colour changes.
TDS probe accuracy was also severely affected by the contamination.
To establish the source the consultant took a sample of boiler water and sent it on to the in-house Feedwater chemistry lab where it could be filtered and the filtrate dried. The deposit was magnetic but also more red than brown. Testing revealed high levels of iron and copper present in the boiler water and feed water, indicating corrosion products coming from the condensate system.
The Solution
The consultant explained the results to the customer and the benefits of using Amine T, a combined neutralising and filming amine. The application was agreed to be suitable as the customer confirmed that the steam generated did not come into contact with foodstuffs or surgical instruments.
The plan was for the Amine T to be dosed into the boiler feed water at 40 ml/hour continuously from a new Feedsafe tank, dosing pump, feed lines and injection lance alongside the existing boiler treatment regime provided by Feedwater.
The Results
The new chemical treatment plan was installed successfully and after 1 month the boiler water was significantly cleaner. After 3 months the consultant noted the boiler water was near to drinking water clarity such was the effect of the Amine T treatment
Immediate Benefits
- The extensive corrosion problem was halted
- Testing of the boiler water parameters was much easier and results more accurate
Long Term Benefits
- Fewer parts need to be replaced and maintenance costs greatly reduced.
- The TDS probes could remain accurate and reliable
- A newly installed side blowdown system has remained reliable
The Conclusion
The effectiveness of the Amine T treatment cannot be understated as the result was clearly visible in the water sampled from the boiler along with the significant savings and reduced downtime from continuous maintenance & replacement from the heavily corroded condensate system.
The project was a resounding success as it accomplished all the customer requirements by protecting their systems, saving them time and money.
