Water Treatment for Pig & Poultry Farms
Water is a significant aspect of any livestock farming business which is why careful attention to the nature of your water is so important. Correctly treated water will boost pig and broiler growth and reduce the need for antibiotics, in the case of hatcheries water conditioning improves the efficiency or longevity of critical processes by prevention of corrosion, scale & fouling. Where people are concerned considerations need to be made for Legionella control especially where washing and cleaning are involved to prevent the risk of exposure.
The right water treatment regime will save significantly more money than it costs and the right water treatment company can offer all of these services, that company is Feedwater. Chlorine Dioxide Water Treatment for Broiler & Pig Farms
Chlorine dioxide has gained popularity in the pig & poultry farm sector as a water treatment solution due to a number of beneficial factors:
- Chlorine dioxide is a proven fast and broad spectrum disinfectant for animal drinking water systems.
- The compound is effective over a wide pH range (4-10).
- Is less corrosive than simple chlorine chemicals.
- Already effective at low dosing rates.
- A powerful & potent oxidiser in water.
- Highly effective at removing biofilm in water distribution lines.
- Acutely effective against Campylobacter
- No formation of chlorinating by-products (Tri-Halo-Methanes)
- Does not have the taste and odour issues of chlorine, therefore improved water consumption by chicks
- Limits need for antibiotics
What is Activ-Ox?
Activ-Ox® is Feedwater’s patented Chlorine Dioxide generation process. It is simpler, safer and more effective than other ways of producing chlorine dioxide, the chemistry is very simple and requires the activation of two pre-cursor chemicals. Activ-Ox was developed by Feedwater to treat potable (drinking) and industrial water systems to disinfect and prevent the growth of unwanted or dangerous bacteria such as Legionella.
Because of the simplicity and uniqueness of the chemistry Feedwater developed, the Activ-Ox concept has been adapted to many more applications than conventional ClO2 systems. Feedwater developed a simplified dosing system to dose the chemical which requires no storage of gas instead just requiring a small reaction tee piece as the chemical reaction is instant and high yielding, meaning it can flow directly into the water stream being treated.
Why is Activ-Ox a better choice for Pig & Poultry drinking water treatment?
As explained above, Activ-Ox chemistry has enabled the product to be adapted to many more applications one of which is the treatment of pig & poultry farm water distribution channels. Feedwater has found that competitor products targeted at the chicken farming market have offered simple reaction in a tank solutions. However the inferior chemistry offered by these products meant that reaction times took anywhere up to several hours and even once reacted the yield was poor and not cost effective at all. While this method of dosing does offer convenience and Feedwater chemistry will support this method of dosing; Feedwater provide and recommend the Activ-Ox developed dosing system which reacts the chemical within a heavy-duty tee piece at the time of demand. We believe our solution for chlorine dioxide in poultry water is the best solution and for any farms currently using competitor products we offer guidance to allow the trailing of Activ-Ox against your current regime with a simple chlorine dioxide testing kit so you can see our chemistry is not only cheaper upfront but offers the highest yield of reacted chemical.
The Activ-Ox chemistry means that we only need a weak food & water approved acid as part of our two part pre-cursor reaction, the compound can work on and eliminate biofilm, take out sulphur odours and prevents mineral build up making the removal of iron from your water simpler and effective.
Activ-Ox® Basic
The Activ-Ox Basic represents an answer to requests by broiler farms to offer a dosing system similar to setups already present at their other farms. This stripped back system offers the option of storing pre-activated chemical in the bunded tank with the simplicity of dosage control by a water meter.
The system represents a no-frills approach and has limited safety features.
It should be noted that pre-activating the chemical to sit in the tank can lead to deterioration of ClO2 strength over time so it is important to calculate water usage to chemical turnover to make efficient use of the product.
Watch our Activ-Ox chemical reaction video below to see our instant high yielding chemistry to see why Activ-Ox chemicals are better.
Activ-Ox® 2000 Dosing System
The Activ-Ox 2000 is Feedwater’s developed dosing system designed specifically for our unique chemistry, while the chemical can react instantly providing a near 100% yield to be stored in a tank, there are many significant advantages to dosing via the 2000 unit.
- No Storage of hazardous chemical
- No risk of gas
- Low chemical level beacons
- No chemical handling
- Calculated dosage
- Chemical is stronger for longer
- Option for telemetric upgrade (email and text warnings)

Clean water and feeding systems
The cleaning and disinfection of the broiler houses is paramount to any biosecurity program. Your poultry house cleaning and disinfection program minimizes the adverse effects of disease, optimizes bird performance, welfare, and provide assurances on food safety issues. Start your flock off with healthy chicks in a clean environment to eliminate the risk of infection with disease-causing microbes which harm birds and carry on up the food chain.
Feedwater’s team of water hygienists can drain, clean and disinfect the water system including header tanks, clear water pipes to remove any biofilm that may have built up. Where physical cleaning is not possible the use of high strength chlorine of chlorine dioxide is used.
Legionella Control
In areas where staff operate and there is a risk of exposure to water spray from tap faucets, showers and hoses etc, there is a requirement for a Legionella Risk Assessment to be performed and risks mitigated. This can often be overlooked but is a legal requirement governed by the HSE as part of their ACoP L8. If you think you may require a Legionella risk assessment or believe yours may be out of date contact us today as Feedwater have trained risk assessors across the UK and Ireland.
Analytical Water Testing Services
It is often important to test your pig and poultry water for bacteria such as TVCs/ACC to keep an eye on bacteria levels in the water. Other analysis can be along the chemical route when determining the nature of the water and whether filtration or supplication is desired to improve crop performance. To service these requirements Feedwater has two in-house water testing laboratories including a UKAS accredited Microbiological laboratory for testing bacteria levels in water and a chemical lab which assists our customers with identification and problem-solving water-related issues.
These analysis packages can be ordered online for simplicity and come with sample kits and pre-paid return packages.
Softening and Filtration Water Conditioning
It is often the case that the water which enters our properties doesn’t act entirely benign to our systems, it carries minerals and elements which like to drop out, scale up our pipework, stain and foul integral systems. Without water conditioning such as softening or water filtration like Reverse Osmosis, the build-up of these minerals can cause issues such as blockages, protection for bugs and failure of infrastructure.
If you think the efficiency and longevity of your water systems could be protected by water conditioning speak to us today to arrange a free on-site consultation with one of our experts.
Protection for Heating and Chilled Closed Systems
To keep the temperature right in your sheds a heating/chiller closed system is run day and night in certain seasons, like your drinking water these systems need treatment to maintain efficiency and longevity. Scale and Corrosion can cause catastrophic damage to plant equipment and operational failures can be detrimental to flock performance. Treatments for these systems often include Molybdate or Nitrite inhibitors dosed at intervals that maintain protection levels throughout the year.
