What causes Hardness?

Hardness in water is caused by naturally occurring salts of calcium and magnesium which are found to varying degrees in all water sources. The higher the concentration of these salts, the “harder” the water is.

Hard water gets its name from the fact that these calcium and magnesium salts react with soap and detergent forming an insoluble scum and making it “hard” to make a lather. Hard water not only makes washing with soap and detergent more difficult and costly – but it also forms limescale, a rock-like deposit when the water is heated. This limescale reduces heat transfer and makes heat exchange equipment more costly to operate, and in extreme cases such as a steam boiler can lead to catastrophic failure.

Legionella testing is important for hotels as guests at higher risk of infection will make up a sizable proportion of total visitors. If a Legionella positive is identified rooms will need to be taken out of use until remedial action can be proven to have worked. With the standard culture test taking 10 or more days before results, this can lead to a loss of earnings as the room cannot be used in all that time. To assist customers where quick results are needed we have invested in a new qPCR method of Legionella analysis, by counting Legionella DNA we can theoretically get results back the same day the sample comes in.
